The Day I Got Saved

I grew up in a Christian home where we read our Bibles, faithfully went to church, and were encouraged to watch our behavior. I was homeschooled my entire life. You could say that I have been given the perfect environment to be a good girl. Well, just because I had a perfect environment doesn't mean I'm perfect. I was never content. I always wanted more. I was like every other child out there: selfish, rude, and impatient. I wanted to do what I wanted to do, and I found ways to tell everyone how they could please me. At the age of six, on May 18, 2016, I got concerned about the afterlife. I didn't want to go to Hell, so I asked my dad and he prayed with me. I still can remember being on my bed and repeating what he told me to say. My heart wasn't in it though. The next day I climbed into mom's bed, and she asked me what it meant to be saved. I thought about it but could not come up with the right answer. She questioned my salvation but kept it to herself.

As life went on I didn't change. Though I might not have been as selfish or rude I still was just as much in the flesh as I was before I made a profession. I sometimes wondered to myself if I was saved, and I would pray the two-second-I-don't-want-to-go-to-Hell prayer. A few years later, Mom was talking to us kids about a subject I don't quite remember, but all I remember is she just stopped in the middle of the conversation and blurted out "Lasey, do you know for sure that you are saved?" I didn't know how to reply, so I simply shrugged. She grabbed her Bible and took me over to our couch. She began to show me what my sin against God deserved—eternal death. I saw for the first time how Jesus was willing to pay my debt to God and give me His righteousness in exchange. On May 18, 2020, I got saved from my sins. Exactly four years after the first attempt.

Sin is too heavy for anyone to carry, too costly for anyone to pay, too destructive for anyone to enjoy, even for a 10-year-old girl in a perfect environment.

Jesus came to save sinners. I am glad He saved me.
